Lanny was killed in action leading his platoon against North Vietnamese Army forces in Northern I Corps, Republic of South Viet Nam.

1st Lt. Lanny Dee Cummins

Lanny Cummins, raised in Oroville, was a star student at Oroville High School. When he graduated in 1960. he had been a California Scholarship Federation member fur three years and a member of the varsity track and football teams.

Cummins was awarded an academic scholars hip to the University of California at Berkeley, where he studied electrical engineering. Near the end of his college career, however, he enlisted in the Marine Corps.

After being named platoon honorman and outstanding recruit, Cummins was tapped by the Marines for officer training and sent to Officers’ Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia.

After serving at various duty stations, Cummins was assigned command of a platoon in Vietnam. He and most of his platoon were killed in action in one of the numerous bloody battles in the A Shau Valley.
