Pfc. Barry Lon Unfried

Sept. 9, 1948-June 2, 1969

Oroville

Drawings by Barry Unfried still grace the walls of his mother’s apartment. She keeps a photo album that depicts his life from

babyhood through grade school to the final ones showing a serious, chinless man in fatigues holding an M-l6.

Born and raised in Oroville. Unfried

graduated from Oroville High School in 1967.

Faced with the draft and at a time when the Air Force and Navy were refusing new enlistments, Unfried enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduation.

On Memorial Day, May 31, 1969, Untried had just returned from R & R and was back with his unit near An Hoa. He was outside the perimeter gathering unexploded U.S. ordnance when he stepped on a mine or a shell blew up.

The Oroville Marine died of his wounds three days later.
